UK Hosts Military Summit on Ukraine Peacekeeping Plans

The UK is hosting a high-level meeting of senior military officials from over 20 nations, forming a “coalition of the willing,” to discuss a proposed peacekeeping force for Ukraine. Led by Britain and France, the coalition aims to establish a credible force that will help Ukraine secure lasting peace, rebuild its military, and counter future threats from Russia.

Armed Forces Minister Luke Pollard emphasized that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s ambitions extend beyond Ukraine, making this initiative crucial for European security. The proposed force may include ground troops, air, and maritime support. However, major challenges remain, including Russia’s strong opposition to NATO forces in Ukraine and the reluctance of the US to provide essential air support.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to attend the meeting after visiting Barrow, where he will lay the keel of HMS Dreadnought, a next-generation nuclear-armed submarine. Starmer highlighted the UK’s nuclear deterrent as a key factor in maintaining security. Additionally, Barrow will be granted the honorary title of “Royal” in recognition of its contributions to national defense.

Defence Secretary John Healey reaffirmed the UK’s unwavering commitment to its nuclear deterrent, describing it as the “ultimate guarantor” of national and NATO security.
