Trump Announces 25% Tariffs on Canada and Mexico Effective Tuesday

U.S. President Donald Trump has confirmed that a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico will take effect on Tuesday, despite previous speculation about possible reductions. The decision, announced at the White House, follows weeks of pressure on both countries to strengthen border security and curb drug trafficking.

Trump stated there is “no room left” for negotiations, reinforcing that the tariffs are final. Additionally, he announced an extra 10% tariff on Chinese goods, adding to the existing 10% imposed last month.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed readiness to respond, while Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly warned of retaliatory measures, potentially targeting U.S. imports worth $106 billion.

These tariffs, affecting over $900 billion in annual trade, have raised concerns among economists and business leaders about significant disruptions to North America’s integrated economy. Earlier, U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick had hinted that the final tariff levels might be reconsidered, but Trump’s latest statement suggests a firm stance on the issue.
