Tragic Wait for Families After Nightclub Roof Collapse in Santo Domingo

In a devastating incident in Santo Domingo, the roof of the Jet Set nightclub collapsed during a live performance by famous Dominican singer Rubby Pérez, leaving at least 184 people dead. Among the victims are regular visitor Máximo Peña, his wife, and his sister. His 17-year-old daughter, Shailyn Peña, waits outside the site, hoping for news of her missing family members. Rescue teams from the Dominican Republic, Israel, and Mexico are working tirelessly, using heat-sensing technology to find survivors beneath the rubble.

Some survivors have been pulled out, offering a glimmer of hope to grieving families. Authorities are providing regular updates, and President Luis Abinader has announced three days of national mourning. Notable figures, including Pérez, former baseball players Octavio Dotel and Tony Blanco, and a regional governor, are among the deceased.

There is growing speculation that a fire at the venue two years ago may have weakened the structure, raising concerns about possible negligence. Jet Set owner Antonio Espaillat offered condolences and confirmed full cooperation with investigations. For Shailyn, whose younger siblings also learned of the tragedy, the wait is especially painful — made worse by the fact that her birthday is approaching amidst unimaginable grief.
