On Tuesday, Palestinians staged what appeared to be the largest anti-Hamas protests in Gaza since the war began. In northern Gaza, particularly in Beit Lahia, thousands took to the streets chanting slogans such as “For God’s sake, Hamas out” and “We want an end to the war.” The protests were fueled by frustrations with the ongoing violence, and a message circulating on social media called for additional anti-Hamas demonstrations across Gaza.
The protests come as the death toll in Gaza surpassed 50,000 on Sunday, with no end in sight to the conflict. Northern Gaza, heavily affected by the military offensive launched by Israel in response to Hamas’s October 7 attacks, has been devastated, making it increasingly difficult for aid to reach those in need.
The humanitarian situation worsened as Israel halted all aid to Gaza in early March, citing concerns that Hamas was diverting supplies for military purposes. The UN refugee agency (UNRWA) reported that for the past three weeks, Gaza has received no food, water, or fuel, pushing the enclave closer to a severe hunger crisis.
