Taiwan Labels China as a ‘Hostile Force,’ Announces Stricter Security Measures

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te has described China as a “foreign hostile force” and pledged stronger measures to safeguard national security. Announcing new policies, Lai highlighted the reinstatement of a military court system and stricter residency requirements for individuals from China, Hong Kong, and Macau.

China swiftly condemned his remarks, with Beijing warning of “decisive measures” if Taiwan moves toward independence. Chinese officials labeled Lai a “creator of crisis” and accused him of escalating tensions.

Lai also raised concerns over China’s increasing espionage activities in Taiwan, stating that Beijing has been recruiting military personnel, criminal groups, and media figures to destabilize the island. He revealed that espionage-related arrests tripled in 2023 compared to previous years.

To counter these threats, Taiwan plans to restore the military court system to handle cases involving active-duty personnel. Lai further urged entertainers to be cautious when working in China, as some have faced pressure to support pro-Beijing narratives.

These developments mark a significant shift in Taiwan’s defense strategy as cross-strait tensions continue to rise.
