DUBAI – Australian cricketer Steve Smith has retired from One-Day Internationals (ODIs) following his team’s four-wicket loss to India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final in Dubai.
The 35-year-old informed his teammates of his decision after the match, stating that it was the right time to step aside and allow new players to prepare for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Smith, however, will continue to play Test and T20 cricket, keeping the option open to participate in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where T20 cricket will feature for the first time.
Reflecting on his career, Smith expressed gratitude for the memorable moments, including winning two World Cups and playing alongside incredible teammates.
He emphasized his commitment to Test cricket, looking forward to upcoming series against West Indies, England, and the World Test Championship final.
Smith retires as Australia’s 16th-most capped ODI player, with 170 appearances and ranking 12th on the nation’s all-time run-scorers list in the 50-over format.
