Starmer’s Diplomatic Play with Trump Yields No Immediate Deals

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s first meeting with US President Donald Trump focused on diplomacy, trade, and defense, but major agreements remain pending.

A key highlight was Trump’s acceptance of an unprecedented second state visit to the UK, an invitation from King Charles. Their discussions covered the war in Ukraine, where Starmer praised Trump’s role in ceasefire talks but emphasized the need for a lasting and fair peace. While Trump expressed confidence in Vladimir Putin’s commitment to a deal, Starmer stressed ensuring security guarantees.

On trade, Trump acknowledged Starmer’s strong negotiation skills, suggesting a deal could reduce tariffs on UK exports. However, any agreement will require extensive discussions. The prime minister’s commitment to increased UK defense spending was well received, though no firm pledges were made by the US.

Despite initial warmth, Trump’s remark—”You are a very tough negotiator”—hinted at challenging discussions. Nevertheless, Starmer’s strategic flattery and emphasis on the UK-US partnership helped maintain a positive tone.

Trump also softened his stance on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky ahead of their upcoming meeting, distancing himself from previous criticism. The visit marked a diplomatic step forward, but tangible outcomes will take time.
