Pritzker Prize 2025: Liu Jiakun from China wins architecture’s prestigious award

Chinese architect Liu Jiakun has been honored with the 2025 Pritzker Prize, often considered the “Nobel of architecture.” Known for his understated yet functional designs, Liu’s four-decade-long career has seen him create buildings that are rooted in their local contexts rather than following grandiose trends. His work spans museums, public spaces, and academic buildings, with a focus on blending tradition with modern technology.

What sets Liu apart is his refusal to be defined by a single style. Instead, he emphasizes understanding the essence of each location, its history, and its natural surroundings to inform his designs. The Pritzker jury praised Liu’s “strategy over style,” noting how his work thoughtfully adapts traditional Chinese elements, like flat rooftops and pagoda-inspired balconies, to contemporary needs.

Liu’s projects also reflect his dedication to sustainability. Notably, his “Rebirth Bricks,” made from earthquake rubble, showcase his commitment to using local materials for ecological and cultural preservation. While Liu’s projects have predominantly been in China, he believes his approach could be applied internationally, shaping cities that balance public space, nature, and modernity. This prestigious award cements Liu Jiakun’s place as a visionary in architecture.
