Power Struggle in Ethiopia’s Tigray Region Sparks Fears of Renewed Conflict

A faction within the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has seized key government offices and a radio station in Mekelle, escalating tensions in Ethiopia’s northern region. This internal power struggle has raised fears of renewed conflict, with many residents withdrawing money in anticipation of instability.

On Tuesday, the same group took control of Adigrat, Tigray’s second-largest city. The faction, led by former Tigray leader Debretsion Gebremichael, is accused of attempting to remove current regional president Getachew Reda, who assumed office after the 2022 peace deal that ended a devastating two-year war.

Armed soldiers supporting Debretsion occupied Mekelle FM radio and the mayor’s office on Thursday. Reports also indicate clashes in Adi-Gudem, where local officials were arrested. In response, Getachew suspended three high-ranking generals and sought assistance from Ethiopia’s federal government.

He further accused the faction of colluding with Eritrea, a claim they deny. The African Union, US, UK, and EU have expressed deep concern, urging all sides to avoid violence. Meanwhile, France has advised its citizens in Tigray to stock up on emergency supplies. The situation remains tense as political divisions within TPLF continue to widen.
