North Korea Reportedly Building Its Largest and Most Advanced Warship Yet

New satellite images reveal that North Korea is constructing what could be its largest and most sophisticated warship to date at the Nampo shipyard, located southwest of Pyongyang. The vessel, estimated to be around 140 meters long, is likely a guided-missile frigate equipped with vertical launch systems, making it more than twice the size of any existing North Korean naval ship.

Analysts believe this development aligns with Kim Jong Un’s ongoing efforts to modernize his military despite facing international sanctions. The warship reportedly features advanced technologies like phased-array radar systems and could potentially carry hypersonic missiles, posing a serious threat to regional security.

While the vessel shows promising features, experts caution that constructing a fully functional modern warship involves integrating complex weapon, communication, and sensor systems, which may still be a challenge for North Korea. The warship may take another year or more to be operational.

North Korea’s naval fleet mostly comprises outdated and small ships, but recent efforts—such as building new submarines and inspecting sites for larger naval bases—highlight Kim’s ambition to upgrade his maritime strength. Stronger ties with Russia may be aiding North Korea in accessing the technology required for such developments.
