Man Escapes Alleged 20-Year Captivity in Waterbury House Fire

A 32-year-old man set fire to his home in Waterbury, Connecticut, to escape what authorities describe as over two decades of captivity and abuse by his stepmother, Kimberly Sullivan. Neighbors were shocked, having never suspected someone was being held inside the house.

Sullivan, 57, has been arrested and charged with kidnapping, assault, and cruelty, though she denies all allegations. The survivor told police he had been locked in a small room, given little food, and only allowed out for chores or on Halloween—his last costume was a firefighter.

Former school staff recalled reporting concerns about him to child welfare authorities, but no records were found. Rescuers were stunned to find the malnourished man, weighing just 68 pounds, alive after he ignited the fire to call for help.

Waterbury’s community is grappling with the shocking revelation, questioning how such suffering went unnoticed. Authorities have since provided the man with essentials, including clothes and books, to help him adjust to freedom. His case has sparked discussions on child welfare failures and the importance of vigilance in protecting vulnerable individuals.
