Jasper’s Breathtaking Dark Sky Sanctuary

Spanning 11,000 sq km, Jasper National Park is one of the world’s largest Dark Sky Preserves, offering an unparalleled stargazing experience. The park, designated by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada in 2011, is free from light pollution, making it a prime spot to witness thousands of stars and the Northern Lights.

Jasper’s annual Dark Sky Festival (17 October – 2 November 2025) will mark its 15th anniversary with exciting events, including a drone show, planetarium sessions, and talks from renowned experts. Unlike other preserves, Jasper’s town provides accessible lodging, guided tours, and observatory experiences.

The park’s commitment to dark sky preservation extends to using minimal artificial lighting, ensuring a pristine celestial view. Visitors can enjoy activities like hiking, paddling on Maligne Lake, and exploring Indigenous star legends. Matricia Bauer, a Cree storyteller, shares traditional tales of the night sky, linking Indigenous culture with astronomy.

Despite fires in 2024, Jasper has fully reopened, welcoming travelers to explore its breathtaking landscapes and cosmic wonders. With 2025 set to deliver one of the most spectacular aurora displays in decades, now is the perfect time to visit.
