Israeli Teens Choosing Prison Over Military Service

In Israel, some young conscientious objectors, known as “refuseniks,” are rejecting mandatory military service, opting instead for imprisonment. Itamar Greenberg, 18, has spent 197 days in prison for refusing to enlist, citing moral objections to the military’s role in Gaza. He, along with others, believes serving would make them complicit in oppression and violence.

Despite societal backlash and threats, a small but growing number of Israeli teens are openly resisting. Groups like Mesarvot report that many avoid service by claiming mental health exemptions. While their numbers remain low, the ongoing war and increasing protests against Prime Minister Netanyahu’s policies may encourage more refusals.

At demonstrations, these activists advocate for peace and question Israel’s militarized society. Some Israelis dismiss their stance, while others quietly support their resistance. Greenberg insists his actions aim to inspire dialogue and change, even as he faces criticism.
