Since October 7, 2023, Israeli settler outposts in the occupied West Bank have increased significantly, raising fears of annexation among Palestinians. In Bardala, farmer Jihad Suleiman Al-Sawafta has lost access to much of his land as settlers, backed by Israeli forces, took control and restricted farming activities.
According to a report by Peace Now and Kerem Navot, 49 new illegal herding outposts have been established since the war began, covering nearly 14% of the West Bank. These outposts, though illegal under both Israeli and international law, receive state support. Satellite imagery analyzed by CNN confirms their rapid expansion.
Palestinian communities have faced increasing violence, displacement, and land confiscation. The UN estimates that 40,000 Palestinians were forced to flee their homes in early 2025. The Israeli government has also allocated millions to secure these outposts, further tightening settler control.
Rights groups warn that these developments could lead to formal annexation, especially if supported by future U.S. policies. Farmers like Ahmed Daraghma face threats and violence from settlers, leaving them with few options to sustain their livelihoods.
