Israel has received four coffins believed to contain the remains of hostages held by Hamas, as part of an ongoing prisoner exchange under the current truce. In return, Israel has released hundreds of Palestinian detainees, including women and children, many of whom had been held without charges.
The hostages, identified as Tsachi Idan, Itzhak Elgarat, Ohad Yahalomi, and Shlomo Mantzur, were captured during the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack. Their remains were transferred to Israel via the Kerem Shalom crossing, where forensic identification is underway.
Meanwhile, Red Cross buses transported Palestinian detainees into Gaza and the West Bank, where emotional reunions took place. The release includes 642 prisoners, some serving life sentences, and Nael Barghouti, the longest-serving Palestinian prisoner.
The truce between Israel and Hamas, now in its final phase, is set to expire soon, with uncertainty surrounding further negotiations. While Israel remains cautious in confirming the hostages’ identities, the ongoing prisoner swap underscores the fragile nature of the ceasefire and the broader conflict.
