Israel has sent tanks into the occupied West Bank for the first time in two decades, escalating military operations in Palestinian cities amid ongoing tensions. Following Hamas’ October 7 attack, Israel has increased airstrikes and ground incursions, displacing tens of thousands of Palestinians. Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that the military will remain in the area for a year to prevent residents from returning.
The West Bank, occupied since 1967, is home to over 3.3 million Palestinians. Jewish settlements there are considered illegal under international law but continue to expand with government support. Since October 7, Israel has intensified restrictions on Palestinian movement, leading to rising settler violence. In January, it launched “Operation Iron Wall” in Jenin, targeting what it claims are Iran-backed militants. The operation has displaced over 40,000 people, killed more than 1,000 Palestinians, and destroyed hundreds of buildings.
Israel argues the operation is necessary for security, while critics view it as a political strategy. The United Nations and human rights groups have raised concerns over the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region.
