Instagram is reportedly considering launching Reels as a separate app, as uncertainty looms over TikTok’s future in the US. According to The Information, Instagram head Adam Mosseri shared the idea with staff this week.
The move comes as TikTok, owned by China’s ByteDance, faces potential restrictions in the US due to security concerns. The Biden administration previously argued that the platform could be exploited for surveillance and political influence, while opponents of a ban cite freedom of speech.
Earlier this year, former President Donald Trump gave TikTok a 75-day extension to comply with a law requiring its sale or ban. He suggested a possible 50-50 partnership between the US and ByteDance, though details remain unclear.
Meta, Instagram’s parent company, has previously attempted to compete with TikTok. In 2018, it launched a short-video app called Lasso, which was later discontinued. The introduction of a separate Reels app could be Meta’s latest strategy to dominate the short-form video market.
Meta has not yet commented on these reports.
