Global Leaders Pay Tribute to Deceased Religious Figure Following Passing

The passing of Pope Francis, the first Latin American pontiff, at the age of 88, has prompted an outpouring of tributes from world leaders. His death followed a recent hospitalization for pneumonia.  

Just a day prior, he made his final public appearance, greeting worshippers.  

Leaders across the globe have expressed their condolences. The Italian Prime Minister mourned the loss of a “great man,” while Argentina’s presidency acknowledged the passing of their first pontiff. The European Commission President praised his efforts for a fairer world, and the US shared a photo of a past meeting with the pontiff.  

The Russian President recognized the late religious leader’s efforts to strengthen ties between religious branches, and India’s Prime Minister highlighted his compassion. France’s President commended his solidarity with the vulnerable, and Brazil’s leader acknowledged his work on climate change and social justice.  

Mexico’s leader called his passing a great loss, remembering his work for the poor and equality. South Africa’s President praised his advocacy for inclusion and environmental stewardship. The Palestinian Authority’s leader called him a “loyal friend” and a “strong defender of peace.”  

In the Philippines, he was remembered for his compassion for the poor, and Poland’s President hailed him as “a great apostle of mercy.” Spain declared days of mourning, and Australia’s Prime Minister acknowledged his compassion for humanity. Ethiopia’s leader noted his service to humanity, and East Timor recognized a global loss.  

Egypt’s religious leaders mourned a “true example of humility,” and Germany’s future leader remembered his commitment to the marginalized. Iran acknowledged his global influence, and the Dalai Lama offered prayers. The UK’s King praised his compassion and unity, and the UN Secretary-General hailed his influence as a voice for peace.
