Gatwick’s Second Runway Decision Expected Soon

A decision is expected today on Gatwick Airport’s proposed expansion to a fully operational second runway. The airport plans to shift its northern runway, currently used for taxiing, to allow simultaneous take-offs and landings by the end of the decade.

Gatwick, the busiest single-runway airport in Europe, handled over 40 million passengers last year. The expansion aims to increase departures by 50,000 annually, creating 14,000 jobs and adding £1 billion to the economy. The £2.2 billion project would be privately funded.

However, local residents and environmental groups oppose the expansion, citing noise pollution, traffic congestion, and climate concerns. Campaigners argue it contradicts efforts to reduce aviation emissions.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander, who will announce the decision, recently expressed support for aviation growth. Meanwhile, climate advisors suggest limiting airport expansion unless new technologies make aviation more sustainable.

Gatwick claims noise levels will be managed below 2019 levels, but opponents, including Communities Against Gatwick Noise Emissions (CAGNE), remain skeptical and may seek legal action.

This decision follows recent government backing for Heathrow’s third runway, sparking further debate on balancing economic growth with environmental commitments.
