First FIR Filed in Pakistan for Over-Speeding on Motorways; Driver Arrested

Pakistan has registered its first-ever FIR for over-speeding on motorways after new traffic regulations came into effect. The incident occurred on the M4 motorway near Multan, where Rahim Khan, a resident of Peshawar, was arrested for driving at a speed of 173 km/h, significantly exceeding the 120 km/h speed limit for light vehicles. The FIR was filed at Budhla Sant police station, and Khan was handed over to local authorities.

The FIR was issued following an order from IG Motorways Police Riffat Mukhtar Raja. The new regulations aim to reduce over-speeding and ensure safer motorway travel. Drivers caught exceeding 150 km/h will face legal consequences, including vehicle impoundment, fines, and possible arrest. The speed limit for public service vehicles is set at 110 km/h.

Additionally, toll tax for vehicles on national highways and motorways was raised starting January 5, 2025. The new tolls are as follows:

  • M1 (Islamabad to Peshawar): Rs 460 to Rs 500
  • M3 (Lahore to Abdul Hakeem): Rs 650 to Rs 700
  • M4 (Pindi Bhattian to Faisalabad and Multan): Rs 850 to Rs 950
  • M5 (Multan to Sukkur): Rs 1,050 to Rs 1,100
  • M14 (Dera Ghazi Khan to Hakla): Rs 600

Larger vehicles face tolls ranging from Rs 750 to Rs 5,550
