British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced a “coalition of the willing” to draft a peace plan for Ukraine and seek U.S. backing. The initiative follows tensions between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, which surfaced during a live White House meeting.
At a London security summit, Starmer and European leaders pledged continued military support for Ukraine and emphasized the importance of maintaining its sovereignty in any peace negotiations. The UK also announced a £1.6 billion ($2 billion) deal to provide Ukraine with 5,000 air defense missiles.
The coalition includes leaders from the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and other European nations. While details of the peace plan remain unclear, France and the UK have proposed a one-month ceasefire and the possibility of sending peacekeeping forces to Ukraine.
This move comes amid challenges within the EU, particularly Hungary’s resistance to supporting Ukraine. While Europe’s coalition aims to secure peace, both Starmer and Zelenskyy acknowledge that strong U.S. backing is crucial for the plan’s success.
