Doug Ford Challenges Trump Over Trade Dispute

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has taken a bold stance against US President Donald Trump’s tariff policies. Ford, who initially welcomed Trump’s re-election, now accuses him of harming Canadian interests. In response to US tariff threats, Ford removed American alcohol from shelves, canceled a deal with Elon Musk’s Starlink, and warned of increased electricity costs for US imports.

His aggressive approach caught Trump’s attention, leading to a White House statement recognizing Ford as a “strong leader.” This pressure resulted in the US reducing planned tariff hikes on Canadian aluminum and steel. Ford later met US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Canada’s Finance Minister to discuss trade policies.

While some Canadian leaders, like Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, prefer a diplomatic response, Ford maintains that protecting Ontario’s economy is his priority. His strong anti-Trump stance has gained national support, with polls showing most Canadians favor retaliatory measures.

Ford, a three-term Ontario premier, is known for his direct engagement with the public and grassroots approach. Despite facing local controversies, his tough stance on US trade relations has strengthened his political influence, making him a key figure in Canada’s response to Trump’s economic policies.
