Australia Rejects China’s Proposal for Joint Action Against Trump’s Tariffs

Australia has firmly rejected China’s call to unite against U.S. tariffs, despite the escalating trade war between Washington and Beijing. China’s ambassador to Australia, Xiao Qian, proposed collaboration to resist U.S. trade policies, labeling them “hegemonic.” This came after the U.S. imposed a 10% import tax on Australian goods, while China increased tariffs on Australian exports by up to 125%.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese emphasized Australia’s focus on its national interests, rejecting any form of cooperation with China in this regard. Defence Minister Richard Marles echoed this, stating Australia would not “hold China’s hand.” Albanese highlighted Australia’s strategy to diversify its export markets beyond the U.S. and China, with a focus on nations like Indonesia, India, the UK, and the UAE.

While the country has expressed frustration over tariffs, it seeks further negotiations with the U.S. rather than retaliation. Australia is also aiming to reduce its economic dependence on China and improve its economic resilience by exploring new trade opportunities with other countries.
