Maui Doctor Indicted for Attempted Murder After Alleged Attack on Wife

A grand jury has indicted Maui-based anesthesiologist Gerhardt Konig, 46, for attempted second-degree murder after allegedly attacking his wife on an Oahu hiking trail. Konig is currently held without bail at Oahu Community Correctional Center.

According to an affidavit, the incident occurred when Konig asked his wife to take a selfie near a cliff. When she declined, he allegedly pushed her into the bushes and struck her head with a rock multiple times. She managed to crawl away and call for help after two hikers intervened. She also reported that Konig attempted to use syringes on her.

Konig was arrested after a brief pursuit near Pali Highway. His wife remains hospitalized in serious condition.

Maui Memorial Medical Center has suspended Konig’s medical privileges, and authorities continue to investigate. Prosecutors have emphasized the severity of the crime, stating that domestic abuse will not be tolerated. Konig’s attorney has declined to comment.
