Bollywood actress Rhea Chakraborty has been cleared of any involvement in the death of her boyfriend, actor Sushant Singh Rajput, who died by suicide in June 2020. After a media frenzy and a hate campaign accusing her of murder and financial exploitation, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) confirmed that Rajput’s death was a suicide, with no role played by Chakraborty or her family. Chakraborty had faced severe public vilification, spent 27 days in jail, and was subjected to misogynistic abuse.
Chakraborty, who was initially blamed for Rajput’s suicide, consistently denied the allegations. The media’s relentless scrutiny and accusations included baseless claims that she drove Rajput to suicide. After the CBI closed its investigation, Chakraborty’s lawyer emphasized the hardships she endured due to false narratives and media trials. Many public figures and journalists have since called for an apology from the media for the damage caused.
Chakraborty, who faced professional setbacks, has since reinvented herself as a businesswoman and motivational speaker. She has not yet indicated whether she plans to pursue legal action for the defamation caused by the media.
