Greenland PM Criticizes “Aggressive” US Officials’ Visit, Including Second Lady Usha Vance

Greenland’s Prime Minister, Mute B. Egede, has condemned an upcoming visit by US officials, including Second Lady Usha Vance, as “highly aggressive.” The visit comes amid heightened tensions after President Donald Trump’s controversial proposal to annex Greenland. The trip, which includes a visit to the island’s national dogsled race, is being seen as an assertion of US influence over Greenland. Egede, who advocates for Greenland’s independence from Denmark, believes the visit, particularly National Security Adviser Mike Waltz’s presence, is aimed at showcasing American power.

The US has shown interest in Greenland’s rich rare earth minerals, vital for high-tech industries, while Greenland’s political leadership has repeatedly rejected the idea of annexation. Despite this, they are open to partnerships with the US for mining, tourism, and diplomatic initiatives. Greenlanders overwhelmingly oppose becoming part of the US, with 85% rejecting annexation. The White House has framed the visit as a cultural one, focusing on Greenland’s heritage, but critics see it as a diplomatic affront.
