Modi Joins Trump’s Social Media Platform, Truth Social

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has joined Truth Social, the social media platform owned by former US President Donald Trump. In his first post, Modi shared a photo from his 2019 visit to the US, where he met Trump in Houston, and expressed his excitement about joining the platform.

Trump launched Truth Social in 2022 after facing bans from major social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook. The platform allows users to post “truths” (similar to tweets) and “retruths” while also featuring “sponsored truths” as advertisements.

As of early Monday, Modi had gained 21,500 followers and was following Trump and US Vice President JD Vance. Trump also shared a link to Modi’s recent interview with podcaster Lex Fridman, where he discussed various topics, including India’s relations with China and the 2002 Gujarat riots.

Truth Social, owned by Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG), became a publicly traded company in March 2024, with Trump holding a 57% stake. However, the platform’s user base remains significantly smaller than its competitors, trailing behind X (formerly Twitter) by a large margin. Trump himself has 9.28 million followers on Truth Social compared to 87 million on X.
