Irish Immigrants in the US Face Growing Uncertainty

Irish immigrants in the US are increasingly concerned about their future as President Trump’s administration intensifies immigration enforcement. Many fear that pathways to legal residency and citizenship are becoming more difficult.

Chris Devenny and Michael McMahon, who run an Irish pub in Washington, DC, recall a time when gaining permanent residency was easier. Now, even green card holders feel less secure, fearing minor infractions could jeopardize their status.

Since Trump’s return to office, his administration has launched mass deportations, immigration raids, and policies expanding ICE’s authority. The repurposing of a mobile app to facilitate self-deportation has further raised anxiety among immigrants.

Immigration lawyer Fiona McEntee notes a growing sense of fear in immigrant communities, including among Irish-Americans. Despite an estimated 10,000 undocumented Irish residents in the US, they represent only a fraction of the larger undocumented population.

While Trump has strong support among many Irish-Americans, others worry about the impact of his policies. Critics argue that most undocumented immigrants contribute to society and pay taxes, while Trump supporters believe enforcing immigration laws is necessary to protect American jobs and resources.
