LHC Directs Punjab Govt to Formulate Policy for Electric Buses and Rickshaws

The Lahore High Court (LHC) has directed the Punjab government to develop a policy for converting diesel buses and rickshaws into electric vehicles as part of efforts to curb environmental pollution. Justice Shahid Karim issued the order during a hearing on environmental issues, emphasizing the need for a phased transition to electric buses within two to three years.

The court also instructed the Punjab Transport Department to introduce a framework for rickshaw manufacturers, highlighting that converting rickshaws to electric versions has been successfully implemented in countries like India. Justice Karim suggested that government authorities should collaborate with rickshaw manufacturers to reduce smoke emissions and improve air quality.

Additionally, the court stressed the importance of a coordinated traffic management plan, especially during school hours, to ease congestion. It directed large schools to establish designated parking spaces to prevent traffic disruptions.

This move aligns with global trends in sustainable transportation and aims to tackle air pollution in Punjab. The decision could significantly impact urban mobility, making public transport eco-friendly and efficient in the coming years.
