Veteran actor John Lithgow has confirmed that he will portray Albus Dumbledore in the upcoming Harry Potter TV series. The 79-year-old expressed excitement about the role, stating that it will “define the last chapter” of his life.
Lithgow, known for 3rd Rock from the Sun, The Crown, and Dexter, follows in the footsteps of Richard Harris and Michael Gambon, who previously played the beloved Hogwarts headmaster in the film series. He revealed that the offer came as a surprise while he was at the Sundance Film Festival but ultimately decided to accept despite the long-term commitment.
The Harry Potter series, produced by HBO Max, is set to be a faithful adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s books and will feature a brand-new cast. Filming is expected to begin this summer, with the series planned to run for a decade.
While Lithgow appears to be the first confirmed cast member, HBO has stated that casting is still ongoing. The series aims to introduce fresh talent in key roles, and an open casting call has already been held for the three young leads.
